How good do you have to be to play college golf?

I just started playing golf just over a year ago and I’m already about an 8 handicap right now, I have gotten this far without a membership to any course and this summer I know if I play enough I can get down to probably a 3 or 4. I am a Junior in high school so I have begun to look at colleges and I know I am not good enough to go play at a powerhouse Division I school like Oklahoma State or Florida but I would love to play college golf. I don’t care if it’s Division III level but I just want the thrill of the competition. I know I can’t play golf as a career but I’m just wondering what my handicap needs to be for me to play golf at a college level. Please be nice, I know I have a long way to go and I know I’m not gonna be on the tour next year I just love the game and I want to continue playing at a competitive level for a bit longer after high school.

My advice is to play as many tournaments as you can between now and your 1st day on campus as college freshman. It’s Ok for you to write the coaches of prospective colleges too. It never hurts to be proactive in that respect. There’s lots of scholarships to be had out there and that should be your focus. Let the golf get you a great education. Best of luck to you!
